When it comes to our cars, most of us have a love-hate relationship. We love the freedom our cars offer us, but we hate expensive payments and costly repairs. One easy way to avoid costly repairs is to keep on top of things. If you notice something out of the ordinary with your car get it checked.

But how do you know if something is amiss? One sure-fire way is to simply take a deep breath. If you smell something out of the ordinary, your car or truck may be trying to tell you something.

We’ve put together a quick guide to 5 automobile odors you should never ignore.

Burning Oil:

If you smell hot or burning oil, it could be a sign of trouble. It may mean oil is leaking onto your car’s exhaust manifold. Have the smell checked before it becomes a larger problem.

Sulfur (rotten eggs):

If you smell sulfur this could mean that your catalytic converter isn’t working properly and hydrogen sulfide is passing through your exhaust system when it shouldn’t.

Syrupy Sweetness:

A sweet smell could mean ethylene glycol in your engine’s coolant is leaking. If you smell a sweet aroma coming from your engine, have it checked before the radiator runs dry and causes overheating.

Burned Rubber:

This smell might indicate a problem with your engine hoses or belts. They may be resting on the hot engine, or they may have loosened over time.

Gasoline:

This may indicate a leak in your fuel injection system. It could be at the rear of your car, where you fill the tank, or from under the hood where fuel feeds into the engine. If you smell gas get it checked immediately
